The 2004 Eko Eko Azarak television series!

avbd34161.jpg

4/4/04 - Page opens and coverage begins.

On this page I will strive to provide the English-speaking community with as much info on this very non-English TV show as humanly possible. As of now, I haven't been able to find many details on the plot of the series. What I have found is that it runs for 13 episodes that takes place over 13 nights.

The late-night dorama Eko Eko Azarak ~Eye~ began airing in Japan on January 6th, 2004 on TV Tokyo Channel 12. This May, it will be released on DVD in Japan in the form of a big-assed 5 disc (and expensive) box set with no English subs. A seperate "Short Story Of" that was never aired on TV will also be released on DVD for a much more reasonable price. I should note that the DVDs will carry the never-before-seen "Director's Cut" versions of the episodes. I don't know about you, but I like them already.

This page will be updated with new info and images as I find them. See below for new updates.

6/30/04 - New plot info surfaces.

The following is information relayed to me by a fellow fan of EEA that has seen the entire series of Eko Eko Azarak: Eye. Thanks to j for this valuable info...

"It's weird.

I don't speak Japanese well and, as you know, it's not subtitled, so it's hard to follow, but near as I can put together it's about Kuroi Misa somehow coming back from the dead or possessing the body of a slain girl to wander about Tokyo and dispel a series of restless ghosts who are brought into the "real" world by some spectral cathedral (a gate to Hell?) being summoned by another witch.

Involved in the plot is a reporter or investigator of some kind who is looking into a rash of murder/suicides and stumbles across Misa's path.

All in all, it's not as gorey as the original TV series and the effects are very uneven.  The acting is entertaining and all the gals are cute.

I'd rate it above the third "Eko Eko Azarak" movie, but not as good as the second series of the TV show."

7/17/04 - Some new tidbits.

Nothing as great as last time's news, but a little new info nevertheless. The direct-to-DVD Eko Eko Azarak ~Eye~ Short Story Of is not a prequel as once thought. It is a behind the scenes look at the series that features interviews with the cast and crew as well as other cool things. This is only avaliable on R2 DVD at the time and has no english subtitles.

8/30/04 - Episode-by-episode plot details.

j helps us all out once again with this valuable info on this non-English friendy series. This is a pretty long text, but it's worth the read. The following is the exact email as sent to me by j. Thanks again!

"Hi,

I figured you might appreciate this.  I've re-watched
"Eko Eko Azarak: Eye" a few times now and tried to
translate the few summaries I've found online into
English and match them with what I saw.

The following is the result.  I have to admit that I'm
not sure how accurate this is, so be warned.  I hope
this is useful for a fellow fan.  ;-)

Note: each episode is named "Night <number>"
---

Night One:
Tokyo is suffering from curses and black magic.  Kuroi
Misa appears in the city with a hole in her memory
dating back one year.  Concurrently, another witch
named Hiromi uses her powers to move her career as a
model along.  Meanwhile a detective named Tagami
investigates a series of missing persons about town.

Misa and Hiromi briefly cross paths but do not
recognize one another.  Unwittingly, Hiromi,
discarding "Bike-chan", a black, furry, rabbit
backpack, leaves a gift for the confused Misa.

Misa also encounters a very lost looking businessman
who turns out to be a lost soul.  Misa does her part
to help this confused ghost pass on.
---
Night Two:

A runaway named Mitchie whose face is passed around
Tokyo is said to have been killed.  Tagami, the
detective, is looking into a group of cultists who may
have had something to do with it.

Meanwhile, a girl named Yuka is seeing strange things
around.  Yuka is briefly possessed by some kind of
spirit and the ghost is driven off by Misa.  Misa eats
with Yuka and her two friends, Eri, and another girl.
Misa seems glad for the company, but the girls ditch
her.  Somewhat tipsy from the company, Misa is knocked
unconscious and awakens a chained captive of the
cultists.  She has no difficulty overcoming them and
discovers that the possessing ghost is the lost
runaway, Mitchie, who seems to have some grudge
against Yuka.  Eri, trying to help the distraught
Yuka, witnesses Misa dispel the ghost and the two
start a strange friendship.

Misa dispels the phantom, but Yuka seems still haunted
by various eye-like phantoms.
---
Night Three:

Misa winds up in a strange sex club called "The Red
Room" where she finds herself under the care of the
Madam of the club and her assistants, including a
bandaged girl in a red dress who never speaks, but is
apparently some kind of psychic or witch.  The
bandaged girl and the Madam try to help Misa recover
her lost year of memory, but cannot.

Meanwhile, Tagami's investigation turns up the name of
a "Yomoda Sensuna" a missing girl who is a dead ringer
for Kuroi Misa, whom he has seen wandering about
Tokyo...
---
Night Four:

The witch Hiromi is furthering her career and power
through her black magics while Tagami begins to notice
her.  With a photographer friend of his, they begin to
investigate strange happenings around Hiromi.
---
Night Five:

After a female teacher jumps to her death in an
apparent suicide in the local high school, Eri, who
was taught some kind of warding spell by Misa,
accidentally repels the ghost of a long-missing
teacher who is haunting the area.  The ghost attacks
one of the girls and Misa appears to destroy it.
---
Night Six:

The crazed victim of an attack (Sakiko) where she lost
an eye escapes from an asylum and wreaks havoc trying
to hunt down Misa.  Meanwhile, Tagami makes more
progress on the mystery of Yamoda Sensuna.
---
Night Seven:

A schoolgirl named Kaori becomes the latest object of
affections from the local wonder-boy who is reknown
for his artistic skills.  A rival places a curse on
Kaori.  Eri, Kaori's friend, seeks Misa to help the
cursed girl.

Meanwhile, Hiromi, the witch, gets a position as an
anchorwoman for a news network.
---
Night Eight:

The girl who cursed Kaori finds her curse has
rebounded.  Misa appears to help the rebounded curse
resolve itself.
---
Night Nine:

Hiromi uses her position as a newscaster to create
mischief.  There's also some plot element going on in
The Red Room, but I couldn't follow it.

Hiromi and Misa briefly test one another around this
episode, if my memory serves.
---
Night Ten:

Misa manages to retrace her lost year of memory only
to relive the live of Yomoda Sensuna, a young woman
who fell for the wonder-boy artist whom Kaori is
currently seeing.  That boy murdered Sensuna and his
powerful family had her body burned and buried to
never be found.  The spectral apparition that was
Kuroi Misa took on the appearance of Sensuna and is
somehow a combination of both.
---
Night Eleven:

A strange disease named "Bashirisuku syndrome" is
afflicting Tokyo.  The syndrome inflames the pineal
gland and forces a third eye to emerge from the
forehead of the infected (and they get out-of-control
psychic powers).

While this is going on, Tagami's photographer friend
has disappeared and his tracking of Hiromi is going
nowhere.

Misa also has a little "chat" with artist-boy.  She
doesn't kill him, though.
---
Night Twelve:

One of Misa's friends from the "Red Room" manifests
the "Bashirisuku Syndrome" and is beaten to death by
an angry mob.  Misa appears over her friend's dead
body as Hiromi appears on the television saying Misa
is the cause for the disease.  Furious, Misa prepares
a curse on the crowd but holds off as they flee in
terror.

Misa, having been seeing a strange, phantom cathedral
for some time, creates a pentagram and starts to probe
for it.

Meanwhile, Hiromi discovers that there are forces more
powerful than she and she winds up serving an
executive who is trying to open the Gates of Hell.
Serving this new dark master, Hiromi fights Misa and
when distracted by Tagami, gets killed by our heroine.
---
Night Thirteen:

In order to prevent the Gate of Hell from opening,
Misa taps the powers of Tagami, Eri, the Madam of the
Red Room, and the bandaged girl.

Misa, followed by Tagami, seeks the Gate and
encounters instead a mirror of herself.  The mirror
shifts into the form of a young, strange girl who
seems to be baiting Misa to kill her.  Misa and Tagami
discover that a "black Mass" (Kuroi Misa) is supposed
to curse and destroy Tokyo.  Tagami sacrifices himself
to seal the Gate to Hell and the evil has lost... for
now."
